End of Year All School Exhibition
Thursday, May 5th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Animas High School. A preview of what you’ll see…
10th grade Humanities Poetry Cafe - Students will be presenting poetry performances on the topics of violence, war, peace, and enlightenment.
10th Grade Biology-Advancements in DNA based biotechnologies have made huge changes to our justice system. Students have been exploring DNA- based technologies in class by isolating and separating Genomic DNA.
Students will be creating large scale art projects through which they will make connections between the biotechnology they have been studying and those who have been exonerated from criminal convictions because of these scientific advancements.
9th grade Humanities- After learning to write historical fiction by studying Picture Maker, a novel about a Native American girl set in pre-colonial North America, Mr. Fisher's 9th graders will be exhibiting original historical fiction stories and artifacts they have designed to bring another ancient civilization to life.
9th grade Humanities- Jessica McCallum’s Freshman Humanities classes have been exploring the human relationship with food on a personal and societal level. After reading The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan and investigating America’s national eating disorder, the students have found themselves dealing with their own personal dilemmas, which they are conquering by getting informed and becoming participants in a healthy food cycle. Come check out their research and beautiful class garden!
9th Grade Digital Art will be displaying a Brochure on an ancient art piece as well as a rock carving. Students learned about Egyptian, Greek, and Roman Art and its evolution from prehistoric times to its importance in today's world. They then independently researched a specific piece of art or architecture and replicated it through a relief carving.
9th Grade Physics-Students have created an instrument or light device that demonstrates their mastery of sound or light concepts. They will present their devices at the final exhibition in an interactive format.
9th and 10th Mathematics- Math projects include building catapults based upon quadratic equations and projects involving 3D graphing and modeling.

Spring NWEAs

Storage Space Needed
The Sports Swap Committee wants to thank all the donors and supporters of gear for their first All Sports Sale. Luckily, they could organize and sort all the gear at Animas this year in unused office space. Next year that space will not be available for these efforts. The team is seeking anyone who has an empty barn, garage or zircon container which could be utilized as donations are already coming in for next year's Sport. If you have any ideas, please call Susan Kroes at 903-3434 or email pac@animashighschool.com.
AHS Drama Program
Animas High School drama students will be performing for the community on May 13th at 7pm at FLC. The students have been working hard in their Acting 101 class and we are excited to see the results of these efforts. Look for additional details in next week’s update.
Additionally, AHS Drama Instructor Rachel Gressler will be hosting a meeting for parents and families interested in AHS’s drama program in the 2011-12 school year. Join us for an evening of discussion covering next year’s program, productions and opportunities for students at AHS. The meeting will be held May 18th at AHS at 6 PM
Housing Help Needed
Many families have moved to Durango to pursue opportunities at Animas High School. We’re happy to forward this request along to our community from an incoming family relocating to the area:
Incoming AHS family seeking a 3 Br house or Apt in the downtown area. We don't need anything real fancy but location close to the school is important as well as a reasonable price. If anyone has any interest or info, please contact me at 946-3396. Thanks a lot. Susan Kuhns
