AHS Weekly Update- Week of April 22nd, 2013

Congratulations to our amazing Ospreys who continue to impress us all with their perseverance, fortitude and commitment to finishing the school year strong. The 11th grade successfully participated in the CO ACT yesterday and a group of amazing AHS young women did a fantastic job offering their leadership at the annual Girls to Women conference. We’ve got NWEA testing for underclassman starting today and our first ever upperclassmen formal on Friday night. All good stuff to be sure!

Upperclassmen Masquerade

STAC continues to raise the bar for future year’s student government efforts with their announcement of Animas High’s Masquerade Formal. This inaugural event will serve as the Osprey’s classy spin on the traditional high school prom. Juniors and Seniors are encouraged to attend what is sure to become a long-standing, annual spring event for upperclassmen atAHS. The formal ball will take place Friday, April 26, 2013 from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Strater Hotel. More details on this an all of student government’s initiatives can be found by visiting the STAC Facebook Page.

Amazing Scientist, Inspirational Osprey
Two weeks ago Tucker Leavitt, AHS Class of 2013, went to the Colorado Science and Engineering Fair.  Tucker took third place in his division, Senior Physics for his project Liberating Energy from Water?  Investigating Anomalous Water Arc Explosions.  Tucker received a cash award from the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the American Vacuum Society. Most impressively, Tucker won the Department of Commerce Award for Excellence in Science and Engineering.  This award gives him the opportunity to work for one of the agencies in the Department of Commerce this summer such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA, or the National Institute of Standards and Technology, NIST.  He also qualified for the International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix. All of here at Animas High School continue to be amazed and inspired by Tucker’s work and we look forward to following his efforts and achievements once he leaves the nest!

Testing& Assessment Update

Spring NWEA testing will start for 9th graders on Monday, April 29th and continue until Wednesday, May 8th.  Students only test for 1-2 hours per day, on 3 different days among their classes.  Since these assessments are designed to show growth from Fall to Spring, remind your students of their importance, and encourage them to do their best!

Why are these tests important? In addition to showing both individual and overall grade level growth at AHS, NWEA test scores and student growth data is used by our school to pollenate performance reports and sculpt annual AHS improvement plans.  Anima High also utilizes NWEA test results to adjust and refine our individualized approaches and instructional methods for each and every AHS student.

ColoradoSchool Finance Act Update
Just a reminder, Colorado's elected officialsneed to hear from you about the importance of charter schools. Please take a few moments to send a pre-written message to state legislators asking them to include charter schools equally in state funding.

Colorado charter schools are 20 years old now. As we prepare for the next generation of Colorado charter schools, the time has come to put all of our state’s K-12 public schools on equal footing to drive positive outcomes for our children, our economy and the future of our greatstate.

The re-write of the School Finance Act (Senate Bill 213) is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to do right by ALL Coloradopublic school students.
