AHS Weekly Update- Week of April 27, 2010

Greetings Animas High Community,

Please take a second to review the following weekly updates:

Office Hours
AHS Bonanza
Final Exhibition

Office Hours

Just a reminder that teacher’s office hours are all posted on their digital portfolios. Head of School Michael Ackerman holds office hours the second and fourth Monday of each month. HOS office hours for May will be 8:30-11:30 on May 10th and 24th. A master list of all teachers’ office hours is posted in the main office at AHS as well as on our website and on the HOS blog.

AHS Bonanza

May is Bonanza season at AHS! Bonanza is the name given to the process of vetting new hires at Animas High. Students and staff will spend May meeting candidates that have applied for the various teaching and admin positions available at school next year. Candidates are invited to AHS for the day, interview with staff and student ambassadors, teach a one hour sample lesson and spend additional time meeting with the administration. Once a candidate has participated in the Bonanza experience, our community discusses their qualities, strengths and overall presentation. Collectively, we identify the strongest candidates and share feedback and recommendations with the Head of School. We are excited for this year’s Bonanza events and look forward to welcoming prospective staff members to our school!

Final Exhibition

Just a reminder that Animas High’s Final Exhibition will be held on May 6th, 2010 from 5:30 to 6:45 PM. The faculty will be meeting this week to solidify the location for the Exhibition. Stay tuned!

AHS Weekly Update- Week of April 19th, 2010

Greetings from Animas High School!

There’s not much time left in the 2009-10 school year and our students are hard at work and looking to finish strong. Please take a moment to review the following updates for the week.

Women’s Voices
Denver Trip
Office Hours
New Office AHS Manager

Women’s Voices Conference

A small group of young women from AHS will be assuming leadership roles at this week’s Girls to Women Conference. The conference pulls together young women from throughout Southwestern Colorado to discuss and explore issues related to empowerment, self-esteem, self advocacy and healthy lifestyles. We are delighted to be involved in this experience and look forward to hearing about all the great work our students are sure to do! The conference runs April 20th for Durango and Silverton schools and April 22nd for Ignacio, Bayfield and Pagosa Springs schools.

Denver Trip

This week is Charter School Week in Colorado and a group of AHS students is slated to be in Denver for the second half of this week. It also looks to be a busy time at the Capitol as educators from around the state descend upon Capitol Hill for important lobbying opportunities related to current legislation making its way through our state’s legislature. Charter schools will gather en mass to meet with their elected officials and lobby in support of educational choice. AHS students will travel to Denver on Wed. and then spend the entire day Thurs. meeting with lawmakers, touring the Capitol, observing legislative proceedings on the floor an attending a huge rally on the Capitol steps. Also, AHS student Alicia Whiteman will be one of three students from across the state addressing attendees, politicians and the media during Thursday’s rally. The Animas High team has an ambitious agenda and we look forward to representing AHS, Durango and all of southwestern Colorado at this very special experience. Our group will have its final planning and logistics meeting at lunch on Tues. at AHS. with trip leaders Michael Ackerman and Lori Fisher.

Office Hours

Schedule a time to meet with Head of School Michael Ackerman! Office Hours continue next Monday, April 26th from 8:30 to 11:30 AM. Please call the school at 970-AHS-AHS4 to schedule a meeting today!

New Office AHS Manager

AHS is pleased to announce the hiring of a main office manager at Animas High School. In response to much feedback related to the need for a full time, main office staff person, AHS has appointed Bobi Applegate who officially assumed her new role last Wednesday. Bobi is no stranger to AHS and has been volunteering her time, administrative and bookkeeping talents to AHS since February of 2009. We are blessed to have such a caring, committed and competent professional joining our team here at school. Please welcome Bobi as she begins her new role at AHS!

AHS Weekly Update- Week of April 12th, 2010

Greetings from Animas High School. Please take a moment to review the following updates:

Flower Power Fundraiser
Info/Enrollment Nights
Left Turns
CO League Petition
State Science Fair

Flower Power Fundraiser

Animas High School 9th graders are currently participating in a fundraising project that has them selling all kinds of beautiful flowers and plants to raise money for AHS. The Flower Power fundraiser will continue through this Friday and helps raise funds for Animas High School’s unrestricted (non-grant dollars) budget. The school continues to expend grant funds on valuable resources, technology, tools and equipment that will support our students in their scholastic endeavors. The money raised from the Flower Power fundraiser (just like previous fundraising efforts this year) is used to support AHS’s unrestricted budget- i.e. paying teachers and staff, covering monthly operating costs and funding our facilities remodel for next year. Beautiful things are blooming this spring at AHS and we could not have done it without this community’s generosity! Thank you for supporting Animas High in our Flower Power fundraising efforts!

Info/Enrollment Nights

Enrollment continues to be strong for both 9th and 10th grader at AHS next year! Please pass along the word regarding these upcoming enrollment/info events:

April 14th- Info Night at AHS- 6- 7:30 PM
April 16th- Shadow Day at AHS (reservations required)
April 29th-Info Night at AHS- 6-7:30 PM

Left Turns

I want to remind all the drivers in our community that during the school day we have committed to not taking left turns out of the school’s front parking lot at 3206 North Main Ave. The Colorado Dept of Transportation has appreciated our school’s efforts in enforcing this rule. We have been granted another year at our current location because we have demonstrated the ability to comply with CDOT’s requests. BUT, we must continue to honor this policy during the school day! Those who need to take an immediate left out of campus should make sure they are pulling down behind the school building. This way, you can head out the back alley to 33rd St. giving you the option to make a left at the top of 33rd onto 550! Thank you for your continued compliance with this request!

CO League Petition

A child's teacher is the number one in-school factor of student success. For years, charter schools have been holding teachers and principals accountable for student achievement through effective evaluation processes. And now, a Senate Bill is being introduced that will require traditional public schools to do the same. Please click below to ask your legislators to vote yes on the Educator Effectiveness Bill. We believe this bi-partisan legislation will move Colorado closer to providing an excellent education for every child.www.greatteachersandleaders.org/CLCSThank you for your support of charter schools and quality public school options for Colorado's kids.

State Science Fair

Tucker Leavitt and Sam Kater were awarded Honorable Mention in the Senior Physics category at last week’s Colorado State Science Fair for their work with Electrostatic Power Amplification. We are very proud of these two students and the excellent scientific work they’ve pursued over the course of this experience. Tucker and Sam also received a cash award from the Little Shop of Physics which will help them as they prepare for International Science Fair which is coming up the week of May 10th. Congratulations Tucker and Sam!

Weekly Update- Week of April 5,2010

Happy Monday!

I want to thank all the parent chaperones and volunteers who helped make Friday evening’s dance so successful. What a great time for our students. Also, a big appreciation to everyone that participated in today’s PAC meeting at AHS. Our school is a success due in no small measure to the involvement, commitment and participation displayed by our students’ families this year. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do!
