Real World Scientists, Real World
Journalists
Congratulations to Steve Smith and Animas High
School’s 11th grade science students on their recent publication
efforts. Two AHS scientists recently had their research articles picked up by Scijourner.org, an online and print
edition science journal sponsored by the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
Robin Austin’s article Plastic
that Can Feel and Heal and
Sam Kuenzel’s article Surgery
Made Simple were both recently published and a few more Ospreys should see
their work hit the presses later this week. Mr. Smith’s students are also
working on a self-published, online magazine that will display all of the 11th
grade projects from last semester. Beautiful work AHS!
9th Grade Fiction and
Photoshop Project
Be sure to check out the online exhibition for our Freshmen Fiction and
Photoshop Project! A collaboration between Humanities and
Digital Arts, this project turned students into fiction writers and graphic
designers. Take a moment to browse through some creative writing and art
by this talented class of young Ospreys!

Tuesday, February 5th is the American Mathematics
Competition! The exam is the first
level of competition that leads students to the National and International
Mathematic Olympiads.
The AMC10 is offered to

have offered admission to AHS Seniors:

Another critical piece of the admissions process
is our students’ efforts to secure scholarships and financial awards. To date,
Animas High School’s Class of 2013 has been offered $495,700.00 in funding. Congrats to this inspirational class of
pioneers!
Scholarships,
Grants and Financial Aid opportunities abound. Stay current and
informed on all funding possibilities by checking in frequently with our College
Counseling Department’s Scholarship Webpage.
Additionally, FLC will be hosting the annual College Goal Sunday on Saturday,

opportunity for AHS families to get assistance with completing the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (better known as the FAFSA form) More info
on College Goal Sunday can be found here.
Finally, as our seniors weather the 2013

admissions. Questions? Please contact Rachael Sands at internship@animashighschool.com.
Volunteer Update
As reported in
previous Weekly Updates, the boards of Animas High School and Mountain Middle
School have come to an agreement regarding expanding the relationship between
the schools. Among other things, the direct path to enrollment has opened for
all 8th grade MMS students who choose to enroll at AHS, without the stipulation
of 75 donated volunteer hours. I wanted to reach out to all of the volunteers
who have already completed their 75 hours and let you know how much we
appreciate your work. We have had a chance to meet some fantastic, energetic
people and AHS is better for the time you have spent doing construction,
maintenance, web design, driving, cleaning, cooking, serving lunch, running the
front office, doing laundry, working at fundraising events, and helping in the
classroom. We depended on all of you to run our school efficiently. I hope
that you have become more connected to the AHS community through volunteer
work. Please know that your contributed time is valued.
Thank you, and we look
forward to continuing to involve you, your family and our community in future
volunteer efforts at Animas High.

Exciting
Enrollment Developments
You
spoke and we listened! Animas High School listened to your feedback and the message is loud and clear: Accept More Students! To this end, the
Animas High School Board of Directors has raised the capacity for the incoming
Class of 2017. AHS’s
2013 admission lottery threshold has been set at 108 students. So
what does this mean? Well if AHS receives more than 108 intent to enroll forms
by February 28th at 5 pm, then the school will hold an admissions
lottery on March 1st. AHS will draw 108 spots for next year’s ninth
grade class. Students will continue to be drawn from the lottery with students
109, 110, 111 etc. being added to the school’s Waiting List until all names have
been selected.
Do Not
Delay! Animas High has received the greatest number of Intent to Enroll submissions
than we’ve ever experienced. Only three weeks into enrollment season, the
school is honored and amazed by the large amount of interest in attending AHS.
We’ll continue to update you each week on the anticipated need for this year’s
admission lottery.
Enrollment
for next year’s 9th, 10th and 11th grades continues! Students
interested in enrolling at AHS can find an online intent to enroll form here: http://www.animashighschool.com/intent.php
